The Qu4tro stool, designed by Marcos Bravo, is a stunning piece of furniture that combines the art of origami with the practicality of a stool or side table. Drawing inspiration from the elegance and clever use of materials in origami, Bravo has created a design that is both visually striking and highly functional.
What sets the Qu4tro apart from other designs is its unique construction. Made up of four identical parts, each produced through laser cutting and folding of sheet metal, the design showcases the beauty of transforming a flat material into a three-dimensional object. The choice of sheet metal was deliberate, as it shares similarities with paper used in origami, such as slenderness, recyclability, and structural behavior after folding.
The fabrication process of the Qu4tro stool is designed to maximize the use of the sheet metal. Through parametric design and digital fabrication techniques, the product can be easily customized, allowing for decentralized production and on-demand manufacturing. This not only reduces waste but also enables the creation of unique pieces tailored to individual preferences.
Technical specifications of the Qu4tro include a width of 310mm, a depth of 310mm, and a height of 450mm. The parts are made of 2mm thick sheet steel and finished with a powder coating for durability and aesthetics.
One of the key advantages of the Qu4tro design is its versatility and ease of interaction. The parametric design allows for effortless customization, while digital fabrication techniques enable the production of batches of any size at suppliers close to the final destination. Additionally, the stackable and packable nature of the parts minimizes storage and shipping volume.
The development of the Qu4tro stool began in April 2015, with the first prototype produced in June of the same year. Over the years, improvements were made to the design algorithm, refining its aesthetics and functionality. The main challenge faced by the designer was translating the elegance and ease of origami into the manufacturing process of sheet steel bending machines. Through parametric design and constant iteration, Bravo successfully achieved a balance between artistry and practicality.
The Qu4tro stool has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2019, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious accolade is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life. The Qu4tro exemplifies the integration of art, science, design, and technology, making it a truly remarkable addition to any space.
